Commitment

Invisalign patients must be committed to wearing their aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day. This ensures the best results and reduces the likelihood of needing to prolong treatment. If you think you may struggle with this treatment schedule, traditional braces or clear braces could be great alternative choices.

No Teeth Grinding

Bruxism can wear down aligners and negatively affect treatment, as Invisalign aligners are meant to be worn both during the daytime and while sleeping. Patients who grind their teeth may be better suited for braces.

Clean Your Aligners

The best way to clean your aligners is by soaking them in warm (not hot) water with a denture cleaning tablet. However, if you're on the go or pressed for time, lightly brushing the aligners with a soft toothbrush can help you clear away surface bacteria. 

Only Drink Water

Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. This helps prevent staining and damage to the aligners. Remember to brush your teeth before putting them back in so bacteria doesn't get trapped underneath the aligners.

Commit to Wear Times

Our dentist will let you know the appropriate amount of time you need to wear your aligners for. The daily hours can vary by person and throughout your treatment, but typically we encourage patients to wear their aligners for 20-22 hours a day. 

Be Cautious When Traveling

Invisalign treatment is most effective when the aligners are worn for nearly all hours of the day. If you're traveling, bring an extra set of clear aligners with you in case you lose or damage your current set of aligners and need a new pair to get you through your vacation.

How frequent are check-ups?

How often you come back to our office for our dentist to monitor your progress will depend on your unique Invisalign case. Generally, follow-up appointments happen every four months. These follow-up appointments allow Dr. Wolbaum to ensure your results are developing as planned and make adjustments to the course of your treatment, if needed. We work with you along the way to ensure your desired results are met by the end of your treatment. 

How can I maintain my results?

After you have achieved your dream smile, it is important to maintain it. Patients should wear their last set of Invisalign aligners or a new set of retainers to bed every night. This keeps your teeth in position and prevents any shifting from occurring. Meanwhile, it’s essential to keep up with routine dental visits, brush and floss regularly, and maintain good oral hygiene.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners offer greater comfort and flexibility. While you may initially experience minor discomfort with each new set, over-the-counter pain relief options like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help. Once you adapt to wearing Invisalign, you'll likely forget you have them on, even being able to comfortably sleep in them as they work their magic overnight.

Can Invisalign cause jaw pain?

Slight discomfort can occur when switching between Invisalign aligners, including temporary jaw pain for some patients. However, you risk chronic jaw pain by not addressing misalignment issues that can exert pressure on your TMJs over time, possibly leading to a TMJ disorder.
