Dental Crowns in Aurora, CO

The Purpose and Benefits of Crowns

A crown is a cap that goes over the entirety of your tooth. They’re often used to restore the strength and functionality of a damaged tooth, but can also be used for aesthetic reasons.

A variety of materials are used to make crowns. They’re divided into two categories:

  • Metal Crowns:

Crowns are often made of metal because it’s durable and can be more affordable than other materials. Some of the metals used for crowns include stainless steel and gold, among other metal finishes.

  • Natural-looking Crowns:

These crowns are made of materials to match the color of your teeth. Realistic resins, ceramic, and porcelain crowns can protect your teeth and be nearly indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

Reasons for Crowns

Crowns can fix many issues. Some of the reasons our patients choose crowns are to:

  • Cover a dental implant for a better appearance
  • Strengthen a tooth treated with root canal therapy
  • Reinforce a cracked or extensively decayed tooth
  • Anchor a dental bridge
  • Support Hold a tooth together after a large filling
  • Replace an extracted tooth
  • Restore a worn, discolored, or misshapen tooth

Installation Process & Care

Here at Pioneer Hills Dental, we offer same-day crowns. This advanced technology allows you to be in and out of the office in one visit with your permanent crown in place. The natural-looking CEREC® crowns we use require less preparation of your tooth, saving it from more extensive work.

Traditional crown procedures require you to make two appointments: one to make an impression of your teeth and a second to install the crown. After the first appointment, you’ll be given a temporary crown to protect your tooth until the permanent crown is ready to be installed.

Once your crown is completely installed, you can treat it like a regular tooth. No special care besides daily brushing and flossing is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long will a crown stay in place?

The lifespan of a dental crown depends on a number of factors but can last up to fifteen years with proper care. Taking care of your oral health, including daily brushing and flossing as well as regular dental visits, is the best way to ensure your crown lasts as long as it can.

  • What can I do with a loose crown?

Crowns rarely come loose, but in the event yours does you should call our office at 303-766-8811 immediately to make an appointment for repairs. We see most patients on the same day to prevent damage to the crown or tooth. If we cannot repair the crown on the same day, we recommend visiting a local pharmacy or drugstore to find temporary dental adhesives to keep the crown on until your appointment.

  • How much does a crown cost?

If you have a crown installed to repair structural damage, your insurance will likely cover part of the cost. The cost is less likely to be covered by insurance if the crown is recommended for cosmetic purposes, but our office has several options for payment plans to make it affordable for all patients.

  • Can I whiten a dental crown?

Dental crowns are not affected by whitening treatments, so they will not be harmed but also remain the same color. Typically, the color of your crown is matched to your natural teeth. If you have a crown and want it to match your whitened teeth, you can replace the crown you have.

If you do not have a crown yet and want to whiten your teeth, we recommend having your whitening treatment performed first so your new crown can be matched to your brighter smile.

  • Can I replace my metal crown with a tooth-colored crown?

If you want your smile to look more natural, Dr. Wolbaum can remove your previous crown and install a ceramic or porcelain crown. Replacing crowns too often is not recommended because the tooth area can become weakened, but switching a crown once for a natural replacement is okay.
